Valparaiso, IN - POR-15 makes an incredible Tank Sealer. Irecently learned this. My tank was in horrible shape on theinside, heavy and loose flaking rust from years of neglect.Fortunately it had not rusted through anywhere. With nothing tolose, I bought the POR-15 Fuel Tank Repair Kit. I dried the tankover several days using a low temperature heat gun. When I wassure it couldn't get any drier, I proceeded with step one - theMarine Clean. I dropped a small length of chain in the tankbefore I dumped in the Marine Clean and three bottles of hotwater. I sloshed it around and then propped it in everyimaginable position in the hot sun. All told, I let it work forabout 6 hours. I drained all but about a quart of the solution,then rocked and shook the tank letting the chain knock off anyloose stuff. I fetched the chain out and rinsed the tank till nomore rust was coming out. Dried the tank for about thrity-sixhours, again with the heat gun. Then on to the Metal Ready step.I dumped in the whole jug of Metal Ready, capped the tank andsloshed it around to wet all surfaces. Then back to propping thetank in various positions, allowing about 15 minutes in eachposition. I shook the tank between positions to keep allsurfaces wetted. All told I let it work for about 4 hours. I gota large funnel and drained the tank into the empty Marine Cleanbottle. Then with the same funnel and a coffee filter, I pouredit back into the Metal Ready bottle. I recovered about 80%! Irinsed the tank many times. Another 36 hours with the heat gunand it's ready for the liner. I am thinking this little can
isnot enough, but proceed anyway. This time I put a piece of tapeover the petcock opening instead of using the screw on block offplate I had made to use on the first steps. I dump it in, tapeover the filler neck as the cap is now removed. Over about 15minutes, I make 2 full revolutions with the tank as well asgently rocking it to cover all surfaces. Then I stood the tankon end and then gently rolled it so any remaining liner was onthe drain side. I proped the tank so that petcock opening wasthe lowest position. I put a piece of newspaper on the floor andhad the empty can handy and pulled the tape. Much to myamazement, about 1/3 of the can drained out!! (And I thought itwasn't enough) Because of the protrusion of the filler neck intothe tank, none of the liner got to it. I grabbed up the littlesponge brush that came in the kit and painted the filler neckwith a little of the excess that had drained out. I was done.Finished. The bottom line is, not only did POR15 Tank Sealerexceed my expectations, in some ways it exceeds it's own claims.By following the directions to the letter, my tank looks nearlynew inside and no more rust worries!
